LONDON — All Creatures Great and Small, the gentle period drama set in the Yorkshire Dales, will continue its run with two newly commissioned seasons, extending one of public television’s most successful transatlantic collaborations.
Seasons 7 and 8 have been confirmed, each comprising six episodes plus a Christmas Special. The series is produced by Playground for Channel 5 and MASTERPIECE on PBS, in association with global distributor All3Media International. It is inspired by the much-loved books of veterinarian and author James Herriot.
The announcement comes as Season 6 prepares to air in the United States. The new season will premiere on MASTERPIECE PBS on January 11, 2026, and run through February 22. Set in 1945, the story returns to a post-war Yorkshire as daily life begins to settle after years of disruption.
By the start of the season, the familiar rhythms of Skeldale House have been altered. James and Helen are living at Heston Grange farm, Tristan is serving overseas, Mrs. Hall is away, and Siegfried Farnon is left managing the veterinary practice alone. As the war in Europe draws to a close, the characters are gradually brought back together, restoring the show’s defining blend of warmth, humour and communal life, shaped by the demands of rural England.
In the United States, the series has become one of the most-watched dramas on MASTERPIECE, where its unhurried storytelling and pastoral setting have found a wide audience. Susanne Simpson, Head of Scripted Content and Executive Producer for MASTERPIECE, said the programme has “found its way into the hearts of American audiences” and credited its humour and sense of hope for its enduring appeal. MASTERPIECE is presented on PBS by GBH Boston.
In Britain, where the series airs on Channel 5, it has built a steady following since its debut. Greg Barnett, Channel 5’s Commissioning Editor, described the drama as “a jewel” in the broadcaster’s schedule, praising its combination of character-led storytelling and the Yorkshire landscape, which has remained central to the show’s identity.
Producers at Playground say the response from viewers has been unusually heartfelt. Executive producers Melissa Gallant and Sharon Moran said they frequently hear from audiences who describe the series as a source of comfort, particularly during difficult periods. They said continuing the story into Seasons 7 and 8 reflects both the programme’s popularity and the creative satisfaction of returning to a world that viewers and makers alike have come to cherish.
Lauren Jackson, Vice President of Scripted Content at All3Media International, said the renewal would be welcomed by audiences worldwide, noting the show’s consistent global appeal and careful production.
All Creatures Great and Small draws on Herriot’s books, which have sold more than 60 million copies internationally and remain a fixture of British cultural life. In recent years, the television adaptation has also renewed international interest in the Yorkshire Dales, with its market towns, farmland and stone-built villages forming an essential part of the series’ atmosphere.
